General

What should I eat during an endometriosis flare-up?

The short answer

During an endometriosis flare, we generally recommend small, easy-to-digest meals, such as soups, rice, or scrambled eggs. Frequent sips support hydration, while temporarily reducing high-fat meals, raw roughage, or spicy foods may ease gut symptoms.

During an endometriosis flare with pelvic pain, nausea, or diarrhea, we generally recommend keeping meals small, simple, and easy to digest. Soft, cooked foods like warm broth-based soups, oatmeal, rice, well-cooked vegetables, scrambled eggs, poached fish, tofu, and stewed fruit are often better tolerated than heavy or complex meals. Small, frequent sips of fluids, especially those with electrolytes when stools are loose, and hydrating foods can make hydration easier than trying to catch up all at once when your appetite is low.

Raw roughage, high-fat or greasy meals, highly processed foods, and very spicy foods can worsen bloating, nausea, diarrhea, or pelvic discomfort for some people, so temporarily cutting back on foods that consistently bother you may help during the toughest days. Spicy foods can aggravate gut symptoms, but they are not a universal trigger for endometriosis flares. Once the flare eases, gradually reintroduce a wider range of foods and watch for patterns that reliably trigger symptoms.

If flares regularly derail eating or bowel symptoms are frequent or escalating, you’re welcome to contact our team for a consultation. We can help evaluate whether endometriosis, adenomyosis, or overlapping gastrointestinal conditions could be contributing and build a plan that supports symptom control, nourishment, and your day-to-day life.

Questions people ask next

All general questions
  • What safely helps constipation or diarrhea during flares?

For constipation flares, hydration and gentle stool softening are the safest starting points; for diarrhea, a short course of loperamide may reduce urgency, and oral rehydration can help. Sudden severe symptoms, blood in stool, black/tarry stools, fever, or ongoing weight loss need prompt evaluation.

  • Diet and self-care tips for bowel endometriosis flares?

A consistent anti-inflammatory eating pattern can help calm bowel endometriosis flares, but fiber needs vary. Track food and symptom patterns, change one thing at a time, and use gentle heat, rest breaks, and paced activity during flares.

  • Can foods worsen endometriosis symptoms?

Yes, certain foods can worsen endometriosis symptoms for some people, but there is no universal endometriosis diet. Eating patterns that increase inflammation or trigger gut symptoms can amplify pain, bloating, and fatigue.

  • Are low-FODMAP or low-histamine diets helpful for endometriosis?

Low-FODMAP and low-histamine diets can be useful for a subset of patients, especially with IBS-type symptoms or a strong pattern suggesting histamine sensitivity. They don’t treat endometriosis lesions and are generally viewed as short-term trials with stepwise food reintroduction.
