How do I talk to my partner about endometriosis pain?

The short answer

Tell your partner how endometriosis pain affects you and what helps or makes it worse, then make a shared plan for support. If talking during a flare is hard, choose a neutral time and explain what you need, such as breaks or non-sexual intimacy.

Start by naming what you want your partner to understand: endometriosis pain goes beyond cramps and can show up as deep pelvic pain, bowel or bladder pain, fatigue, or pain with intercourse that lingers afterward. It isn’t always predictable, either: pain can flare even when you look fine, and long-term pain can sensitize the nervous system so normal touch or pressure may feel intense. Framing it as a real, body-based pain process (not a mood or mindset issue) can reduce confusion and defensiveness on both sides.

Then move from explaining the pain to making a shared plan. Tell them what helps in the moment: for example, stopping activity without guilt, different positions, more time, breaks, or non-sexual intimacy. Explain what doesn’t help: pushing through, problem-solving when you need comfort, or minimizing. If it’s hard to talk during a flare, choose a neutral time and use simple “when X happens, I need Y” language so they have clear ways to support you.

If pain is affecting your relationship or sex life, that’s a clinical signal, not a personal failure, and it may reflect treatable disease, pelvic floor involvement, or a pain system that’s been on high alert for too long. Our team can help you make sense of your symptom pattern and outline options that focus on treating disease while also managing pain, so you (or your relationship) don’t carry the burden alone. When you’re ready, reach out to schedule a consultation and we’ll help you build a path forward.

Questions people ask next

All symptoms questions
  • Why do I doubt my endometriosis is real?

You may doubt your endometriosis when symptoms have been minimized or mislabeled, making it harder to trust your body. Symptoms can vary across body systems, and a normal ultrasound or MRI doesn’t automatically rule out endometriosis.

  • What does an endometriosis flare feel like?

An endometriosis flare typically feels like a noticeable spike in pain, such as deep pelvic cramping, pressure or sharp, stabbing pains. It may also include bloating, low back or leg pain, painful bowel movements or urination, fatigue and nausea.

  • Can mindfulness or yoga reduce endometriosis or adenomyosis pain?

Yes, mindfulness and gentle, pain-informed yoga may ease endometriosis or adenomyosis pain for some people. Breathwork and biofeedback may also help calm the stress response and make flares more manageable, but these approaches do not treat the underlying disease.

  • What complementary therapies can help endometriosis symptoms?

Nutrition-focused changes, acupuncture, and pelvic floor physical therapy may help some people manage endometriosis symptoms, especially pain, alongside medical treatment. Evidence is mixed, and these approaches do not remove endometriosis or adenomyosis.
